Indian women in unpaid household work: Evidence from the time use survey

<br/><br/> Unpaid household work performed by women mostly remains unrecognised and underestimated. Using unit-level data from India’s Time Use Survey, this paper examines women’s participation in unpaid household work and time devoted to it. Econometric models have been used to analyse various individual, household, socio-economic and macroeconomic factors. Caste, religion, education level, and marital status are found to influence women’s participation decision. The findings also suggest that “status concern,” captured through the interaction of caste and landholding, and labour market conditions, reflected in the female unemployment rate, influences women’s participation in unpaid household work. – Reproduced <br/><br/>https://www.epw.in/journal/2026/26-27/special-articles/indian-women-unpaid-household-work.html<br/>
