N2  - Recent scholarship has interpreted the increase in women’s employment in India since 2017 as reflecting labour market distress and a reversal of structural transformation. While these studies have focused primarily on women, less attention has been paid to corresponding changes among men. Using unit-level data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey between 2017–18 and 2023–24, this paper documents two important shifts in the labour market participation of young men: a decline in educational participation and a rise in unpaid family work among graduates. The findings suggest that recent labour market changes among young men constitute another dimension of India’s ongoing structural regression, reflecting a weakening of the transition from education into remunerative employment.- Reproduced
