A hallmark of democratic governance is the tolerance of criticism and the fostering of mutual respect among political opponents. The suppressing of critical thought through repressive legislation has become a recurring pattern employed by successive government. The assault on free speech, initiated during the emergency period, persists to this day. As social beings, individuals must actively engage in societal discourse. Democratic administrations are accountable to the citizenry, who possess him fundamental right to free expression. This study explicates the evolution of dissent in India and how the constitution has interpreted the right to dissent.
