To make India stronger in the 21st Century and for all-round development of the country, efficient use and continuing sustainable development of water resources with emphasis on people's participation is pre-requisite. To meet increasing demands of competing sectors, long-term perspective planning of water resources in a holistic and integrated manner is required. Contamination of existing water bodies is another area needing urgent attention. Miseries due to floods and droughts are to be minimised. Challenges are many. The National Water Policy-2002 and the Action Plan for its implementation address most of the issues.
