    <subfield code="a">Today we are dependent on our supply of freshwater from rainwater, rivers, dams, lakes, glaciers and underground sources. Rainwater harvesting is now being extensively experimented with to provide an additional source for freshwater supply. Among the new sources for freshwater, desalination of seawater is one source, which has not yet been used on a large scale in India. The common methods for obtaining freshwater from seawater include solar stills, flash distillation, electro-dialysis and reverse osmosis. Of these, solar stills and reverse osmosis have been used with much success in India. Simple, viable and reliable desalination technique should be evolved to cater to the needs of coastal villages and island towns of our country. This article discusses the limited use of desalination technology in India and suggests that the technique should become widespread in the country in future. - Reproduced.</subfield>
