  <abstract>India's water resources are characterised by uneven distribution over time and space. Experts are of the opinion that a well-planned forest management policy can arrest run-off quantities to a considerable extent and also reduce the frequency, fury and extent of floods. Afforestation in the catchments area can restore ecological balance and hydrological cycle. With the rainwater being the main source of supply of usable water, the key to its conservation and maximum utilisation lies in proper management of forests. - Reproduced.</abstract>
