The concept of poverty used in this article is that of absolute poverty and not relative poverty as these terms are understood in poverty literature. The article examines the role of water in influencing health and providing food security with special reference to food prices and income of poor households. An aspect that is discussed in this context is the emerging conflict between water for food and water for environment on which a lot of attention is being focussed by international agencies concerned with water. The article highlights the role of water in promoting income generation opportunities for the poor. For this purpose, effects on account of size of employment, real wage rates and inter-regional migration of male and female population are studied. A few adverse effects of water on poverty are also pointed out. - Reproduced.
