    <subfield code="a">The high rate of urbanisation has put severe stress on civic services in cities and towns. Amenities such as safe drinking water supply hygenic sanitation and drainage facilities are under enormous pressure. In spite of substantial funds allocation in successive Plans and adequate state intervention the future scenario of these services appears to be bleak. The article calls for rational pricing of water, efficient collection of charges, self-sustaining O &amp; M of civic water resources and assured supply of quality drinking water, to arrest the deterioration in this vital sector. It emphasises on the need to recycle the waste water for non-potable needs. The urban local bodies (ULBs) have a significant role in this strategies. This along with selective privatisation of urban infrastructure service shall go a long way in saving the cities and towns from becoming organised slums. - Reproduced.</subfield>
