Complexities of the future water resources projects and challenges for their planning and design - 2003 - p.539-546. - Jul-Sep

Considerable development in the water resources sector has taken places in India after Independence. With the near-optimum utilisation of easy terrain there is no other option but to exploit the difficult sites, overcoming the adverse geological and other conditions that exist in the Himalayas as well as in the northeastern region. But the challenges ahead are not only in the complexities of the projects in respect of their design and construction but also in the planning process. Inter-state and environmental aspects, construction materials and construction methodology, sizes of projects and components are some of the issue which need to be addressed comprehensively while planning multi-purpose projects. This article discusses these complexities in some technical details and puts forward suggestions for meeting the challenges. - Reproduced.
