The principles of governance whether enshined in the ancient Indian treaties or spelt out in modern day Directive Principles of State Policy were around the pivotal theme of all-round welfare of the subjects and citizens. In independent India, the founding fathers of the Constitution were inspired by the Gandhian dictum of `Ramrajya', in which the state took upon itself responsibility of effecting development with such policies that ensure welfare, equity, equality and social well-being. The article gives an overview of the development policies and their results since 1950s. The economic survey and documents brought out by planning commission and other agencies point out the inadequacies in the development effort and fallacies of the system. The focus here is on the governance related measures to correct the situation and impart value-addition to development efforts. - Reproduced.
