Developing accountable local leadership through citizens voice: An experience of Gram Sabha in an Indian state

People's response towards the institution of gram sabha has been lukewarm and sometimes even apathetic. This article is based on a field study aimed at assessing the effectiveness and working of gram sabhas. The low participation in the activities of this institution arises from a lack of faith in the elected and government official who run them. Based on the inferences drawn from the study a number of suggestions have been made to make gram sabha a powerful and vibrant institution. - Reproduced.
