The performance of industries may be assessed by analysing capacity and its utilisation, though there exists other indicators of performance. Based on Wharton Index; Modified Wharton and RBI methods, this study measures capacity and capacity utilisation in the aggregate of sixteen two-digit and thirty-three select industries during the period 1980/81-2000. Cyclical variations are observed in the rates of utilisation, but utilisation has been higher during 1980-85 and 1996-2000. An analysis of the rate of capacity utilisation in the use-based group of industries revealed varied rate of utilisation under different methods and during different sub-periods. Utilisation was higher for basic; intermediate and consumer goods and lower for capital goods industries. Utilisation was higher under WI methods and lower under MW and RBI methods. - Reproduced.
