There has been considerable debate in India about the indifferent quality of public services delivery which remains poor on a whole. Though decentralisation initiatives have brought about institutional changes in municipal services, yet, urbanisation, unplanned urban development and inadequate infrastructure and resources have stressed urban services. These services have not been able to keep pace with the fast growing population. Against this backdrop the present article purports to review status of municipal services and efforts for their restructuring in the changed environment and new policy regime. - Reproduced.
