Effective and compassionate functioning of government bureaucracy is crucial to the bold and imaginative steps which are imperative to improve social and economic conditions, reduce poverty, stabilise population, enhance economic prosperity, and make service delivery system citizen-friendly and efficient. In this article the author examines some interconnected critical issues confronting a great nation: transforming sustainable development as a strategy for the well-being of the nation, India in a globalised world, role of bureaucracy towards the well-being and prosperity of all, spirituality as a leading value for public servants and commitment of India's political leadership. He concludes that the country could do much better if there is a transformation in its administrative style and tradition towards a no nonsense, pragmatic, practical and above all ethnical approach. - Reproduced.
