The state efforts being slow and inadequate in this direction, it is the responsibility of the thinking people and the educationists to advocate innovative strategies and explore possible alternatives for overcoming the malady of illiteracy. Besides stepping up allocations for education the government should ensure involvement of educationists and civil society in policy implementations. A strong and effective regulatory mechanism is also required to prevent commercialisation of higher and technical education.
