Right to information: An analysis

There is a trend worldwide to have openness in the system of governance. Various factors like changing socio-economic milieu, increased awareness among the public about their rights, the need to have a fully accountable and responsive administration and growing public opinion which views efforts at secrecy as enhancing the chances of abuse of authority by government transparency in governmental functioning. After over a decade of struggle, Right to information act 2005 was enacted by the Parliament. Ever since it became law, the Act has proved to be a progressive instrument of democracy, empowering citizens to obtain information with ease, and to have access to government records without having to pay bribes or use undue influence. In our present democratic framework, free flow of information for the citizens and non-government institutions suffers from several bottlenecks. - Reproduced.
