<subfield code="a">Education is a continuous process that is interactive and progressive and at the same time, needs to be inclusive. The education in India has a rich and interesting history. Starting from the ancient times when the education was imparted orally by the sages and the scholars and the information was passed on to generations, to the dark mediaeval period and from 'enlightened' British rule, to the Right to Education Act of 2009 it has seen periods of glory and vicissitudes. After independence there has been a marked expansion in educational facilities throughout the country. The general formulations incorporated through various policy interventions did not get translated into a detailed strategy of implementation, accompanied by the assignment of specific responsibilities and financial and organisational support. In the light of the proposed reforms in the education this article examines the prospects of this critical sector in terms of quality and comprehensiveness, reach and access, equity and coverage and its dynamic relationship with the projected human resource requirement. - Reproduced. </subfield>
