The paper dwells on the findings of a primary survey in 16 districts of five states in north-west India, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal, Jammu & Kashmir and Rajasthan. Drugs have been included in the use of which is illegal according to the Narcotic Drugs and psychotropic substances (NDPS) act, 1985. The analysis and discussion is based on the response of 950 households of drug users and 616 non-drug user households. It discusses the factors and sources of drugs; gender composition and location of drug uses and awareness about the drugs. Peer pressure, availability of easy money and unemployment are the prominent factors behind drug use.- Reproduced
