Problems of Old age citizens is a global phenomenon, India is not an exception. The senior citizens are basically a depowered section of society owing to their physical and mental inabilities, health problems, poor living conditions, financial paucity and reluctant care in the family. They cannot be left to the mercy of destiny. In such situation, the responsibilities of state become essential to support and facilitate the elders in the society. As such it becomes an urgent imperative to underline the challenges faced by the old age people and state intervention in mitigating their problems. In this context, the present paper endeavours to throw light on the concept of gerontology, nature of challenges faced by them in Indian society and governmental steps taken so far to curb their miseries. – Reproduced
