Traditionally, most of the indigenous hill tribes in the North Eastern region practice Jhum or shifting, a method of slash-and-burn cultivation. This practice
is mainly followed by the hill tribes as they do not possess much of plain lands for extensive cultivation. They do consider it as their traditional custom, for
which they continue the practice over the years in spite of a number of formidable constraints.- Reproduced
