| 520 | _aThe Home Loan Account (HLA) scheme of the National Housing Bank (NHB), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Reserve Bank of India, is a special scheme which aims to help individuals to save specifically for housing and avail loans on soft terms at interest rates much lower than existing interest rates of scheduled banks. If the amount of loan under the HLA scheme is not sufficient an additional loan can be taken from the same bank at the existing rates of interest. This paper argues that when a person takes a combination of loans under the HLA scheme as well as under existing rates of interest, the effective combined rate of interest would be much lower than in either of the schemes availed of individually.
