520 _a"The paper analyses the role of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI) in the development of villages and examines how far the amendments in PRI have helped in decentralisation of power, accelerating the pace of development as well as strengthening the democratic process. The information is collected from villages in Punjab through personal interview method. Many respondents were not aware of the amendments in PRI. Ninety per cent of the panchayat elected leaders were not fully aware of legislative, judicial, administrative or financial powers provided under Panchayati Raj System. Though lot of drawbacks existed in the present panchayat system, it has solved many local problems at village level"
