520 _aRural Employment Assurance Schemes such as EGS and EAS and the recently introduced SGSY and JGSY programmes are usually considered to be capital asset development initiatives. These programmes can also be made socially relevant by enabling them to address priorities such as poverty, nutrition and food security. The importance of rural health and infrastructure is seen within the direct impact thrust upon urban areas. Creation of wage employment and durable assets and current environmental imperatives need to be addressed along with the Public Distribution System. This paper presents common perspectives on poverty nutrition and food security as key environmental planning indicators for village level sustainable development. - Reproduced
