520 _aAttempting to evaluate impact of Centrally sponsored wage employment programmes in terms of employment and income generation, and asset creation in selected regions of Andhra Pradesh, the author finds that the percentage share of JRY in total family employment was less than seven per cent for male and five per cent for female labourers; share of EAS in the total employment around six per cent; significant positive difference between wages under these programmes and local wages, which enabled workers to bargain for higher wages in the labour market; well entrenched contractors in execution of works; labourers seeking employment did not register with the authorities or got assurance of employment under EAS and EAS; Programme was combined with Janmaboomi programme of the State. He goes on to show that wage employment programmes in areas under study in Andhra have succeeded both in providing additional gainful employment to the rural workers and creation of several community assets in the rural areas. - Reproduced
