520 _aThe paper examines the problems and prospects of Non Timber Forest Produce (NTFP) based processing industries in Orissa and highlights the role of processed NTFPs in the context of the livelihood interests of the forest-dependant communities and its role in the subsistence economy of tribals. It emphasises the need for greater value addition of NTFPs since bulk of its collection by the primary gatherers enter in to market without any processing and value addition. As a result, the sales network is squeezed, far-off market are restricted and the vicious circle of small markets aggravate the problem. This leads to a situation of low production and small surplus that make the primary gatherers more vulnerable resulting in exploitation to become more acute. The paper attempts to examine the status and potential of NTFP-based industries in the light of need for harvesting and post-harvest treatment for sustainable processing. At the background of varieties of precious NTFP potential in the State of Orissa, the paper presents a few structured models for exploitation of the wide prospects/opportunities for value addition to benefit the primary gatherers and the State exchequer in the light of present era of economic and trade liberalisation. It also examines the specific laws, provisions in the Act and administrative directives which prevent NTFP-based value addition processing units though financial, technical and other institutional impediments accentuate the problems. - Reproduced
