520 _aThe socio-economic background of an individual represents a fusion of social and economic conditions as well as circumstances that impacts the social behavior of a person in a particular context. The sociological investigation enables the researcher to understand the factors such as age, sex, caste, religion, occupation, family type, marital relations, income status of an individual and of their family members, in the context of the study being undertaken. These factors gain more significance as it exhibits the socio-economic factors under which People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) are making their existence. Though HIV/AIDS has already surpassed the boundaries of disparity concerning these social factors, it remains a challenge for the communities and societies as awhole to comprehend the behavior of an individual while referring to the socio-economic setup. For instance, poverty may encourage an individual to have risk taking behavior, but the same cannot be rationalised while referring to other individuals who are poor. Hence, in order to understand the socio-economic background of PLWHA, this study has been conducted among 300 PLWHA. The area chosen for this study is Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre (ICTC), Government Medical College, Amritsar city considering that it isthe oldest center for availability of Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) in Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Amritsar. The main thrust of this study is to explore as to whether the socio-economic aspects are relevant factors in determining the proneness of an individual towards contracting of HIV/AIDS? The paper also aims to suggest the appropriate measures to be taken to improve the socio-economic conditions of PLWHA.- Reproduced
