520 _aA number of schemes of urban development are being run by the Central and state governments but the conditions of urban slums have not improved on desired level. With this view in mind, the present paper attempts to assess the socio-economic conditions of the slums in Bihar in general and Chhapra town in particular on the basis of empirical enquiry. It is interesting to note that the population of slums has grown substantially with the growth of population of the town. On the other hand the urban poor contribute to the economy of the cities but they suffer from lack of civic facilities and access to basic services and livelihoods. The present paper posits that if their conditions are improved and their problems are addressed, they would have contributed substantially to the economy and sustainable development. - Reproduced
