520 _aThe study identifies and then analyses the socio-economic profile of saffron growers in Pampore, the saffron town of Kashmir Valley, which play a very vital role in articulating and providing responses to the problems in social science research in general and agricultural economics in particular. Taking this into account, a set of personal characteristics namely age, sex, education, income, and landholding have been examined and presented. The quantitative treatment of the collected data uncovers the socio-economic profile of the respondents. From 201 respondents in the three prominent saffron growing villages of Pampore namely Letpora, Ledhu and Konibal the primary data was collected which was based on the interview. For the selection of the respondents, Purposive-Stratified-cum-Proportional sampling framework was followed. The Tabular and Percentage Analysis was carried out. It was found that majority of the saffron growers were young, who mostly were women, having saffron as their main source of income and the majority of them were owners of the land. Furthermore, it was found that the overall education level of the sampled growers was low. Garrett’s Ranking Technique was used to find the degree and extent of the problems faced by the saffron growers. Adulteration was found the greatest problem with rank 1. On the other hand, weak water resource management, lack of proper market intelligence system, lack of scientific methods of plucking saffron, and other problems got rank 2, 3,4, and 5 respectively. –Reproduced
