520 _aPunjab is among those Indian states which failed to relies the ambitious millennium development goal 5, i.e. reducing the maternal rate by three quarters. The sample registration system (SRS) data show that Punjab is one among the worst performing states in percentage fall in MMR taking 1997 as the base year. Data from varied national and international reports was analyses to figure out the trends in reproductive health indicators along with infrastructure and workforce to discover the discrepancies between the existing infrastructure and workforce and required minimum. It is ironical that Punjab has been performing fairly well on various determinants of maternal mortality such as female education, infrastructure and staff of public health care system, institutional deliveries, and total fertility rate (TFR). Innumerable beliefs, traditions, customs imposing restrictions on the movement of women, poor functioning of the public health care system at various levels leave an obvious negative impact on reproductive health of women specifically maternal mortality in the state, making it a peculiar case. - Reproduced
