520 _aIn the 21st century, education has acquired the prime preference of governance and the political process, in view of growing role of cerebral nature of jobs in overall economy. In the process, education administration has been decentralized in numerous countries as part of a larger move to reform public management systems. The education policies largely aim to reduce the size of the government in term of working pattern, reorganize delivery, magnify private initiatives or players, and create new partnerships called public private partnership (PPP) model. This has shown promise in an extensive impact on policy, formulation, implementation and management of entire education system. In India, education is the subject of concurrent list, as such, our federal structure in which the Central and State governments have undergone various decentralization processes with distinct outcomes. The manifestation of the process of governance in the field of education, in terms of the rationale put forth as well as operational features adopted, varies widely across the states. The present paper finds that the socio-political context and the degree of popular participation in the decision-making process directly influence the outcomes of educational measures. It, thus, underlines the impact of the mechanism of governance on educational programmes and policy in India and the trends of educational development from elementary to higher education system in India. – Reproduced
