520 _aThe main objective of the paper is to analyse the employment status of the coal mining industry, along with an evaluation of the social standing and social security of its contract workers. In the last few decades, the central point of discussion has been the working condition of the labourers which is directly related to the productivity of labour and their wellbeing. Social security has a vital role in this, as mentioned by many. An increasing trend of employing contractual workers in the Indian economy creates the urge to focus more on social security measures and better working conditions. We have looked into this topic with the help of recent literature and primary data on contractual workers in coal mines. For secondary data sources, Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) reports have been used with other employment data sources, and the primary data was collected from the coal mine contract workers of Dhanbad, Jharkhand. Experiences of the coal mine contractual workers through snowball sampling method have been captured to understand their working condition and social security scenario. The policy thrust has been to produce coal through contracting of mines in the recent decades in order to bring least-cost and more efficient production system. The study finds very limited benefit available to the workers in the contract mines. The poor social status of these workers points towards the need of greater non-wage benefits. This issue requires greater attention of the policy makers and more grass-root level studies. – Reproduced
