520 _aSeveral persistent measures have been taken by the Ministry of Education and University Grants Commission to push the Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) in the league of the world’s top universities including special attention to quality parameters of research, pedagogy, and human resource development. However, one of the significant aspects of a quality institute- creation and sustenance of productive work culture in the HEIs- has escaped the attention of all stakeholders. An unjust, noncollegial, toxic ecosystem buttressed by a feudal mindset of the academic players is one of the deep rooted maladies and is largely responsible for the rot which has set in, in our HEIs. Though an ‘elephant in the room’ this issue is hardly discussed at any level of academia or administration, let alone it being addressed strategically. – Reproduced
