520 _aStratification is one of the important features of Indian society. It involves the process of division of society into different categories along the lines of caste, power, wealth, occupation, prestige, control etc. It is related with distribution of unequal rights and privileges among the members of a society. Scheduled tribes occupy lowest position in this hierarchy. They have been subjected to exclusion and discrimination since centuries. Jharkhand occupies an unique position among different states and union territories because of preponderance of tribes in its population as well as abundance of minerals. According to census 2011, the total population of them is 8,645,042 in Jharkhand representing 8.2 percent of total population of scheduled tribes of our country. More than two decades have passed since the formation of this new state, the gap between tribes and non tribes on various parameters of Human development Index still persists. This paper explores spatial distribution, demographic composition of Scheduled tribes of the state along with focussing upon educational their status. Data have been collected from various secondary sources such as Census reports of 2011, Recent reports of Ministry of tribal affairs Government of India and Ministry of Education Government of India. – Reproduced
