520			_aThe millworkers’ strike of 1982–83 was at least a decade in making, if not more. Multiple interlinked political and economic phenomena that culminated in the strike are discussed. This discussion is followed by an account of the ruling classes’ response to the strike and the political possibilities that emerged or could have emerged from the organised movement of the workers. The logic of the ruling class response to the strike continued to play out in the aftermath of strike with the deindustrialisation and gentrification of Girangaon.
