520 _aIn India, beekeeping appears to be a potential source of income for the poor, especially as demand for pollinator-dependent crops has increased with growing consumption of fruits and vegetables. In Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, policies to promote beekeeping are active but not very effective, despite subsidies and training. Is it because of flawed policies, or is it the poor implementation, or the general socio-economic situation that is impeding the practice of beekeeping? This paper argues for a shift in perspective from the microscale with an analytical focus on the bee to an assessment of the wider field and the landscape.
