520 _aExisting studies on disparities in India were mostly limited to regionaland state-level analyses. Using the data from the 61st and 66th rounds of the National Sample Survey of India this paper examined the inter-district economic disparity in terms of monthly per capita consumption expenditure (MPCE) in India and bigger states during 2004-09. A set of three inequality measures, namely, Theil, Hoover and Gini indices, and the Lorenz curve were used to assess the economic disparity among the districts. Results showed that the districts of northern and eastern states of India were economically more backward. Disparity in MPCE continued to exist among the districts of India. The degree of inter-district disparity in MPCE was found to be higher in the economically better-off states (such as Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka), compared to the economically poorer states (such as Bihar and Rajasthan) of India.-Reproduced https://mpissr.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/MPJSS-292-December-2024.pdf
