520			_aWhile the Indian economy sustained average gross domestic product growth rates of above 6% since the 1990s, this period has also seen an unprecedented rise in income and wealth inequalities. Moreover, this transformation has been more significant in the case of output rather than formal employment. To theoretically understand this divergence between output and formal employment, this paper argues that a different framework than the usual three-sector classification—agriculture, industry, and services—may be required.
