520 _aThe post World War development strategies held a variety of endeavors to reduce inequity between economic growth and human development within and between nations. However, only few regions in disarray and misfit for human settlement. The present paper with the help of some socio-economic development indicators tries to define, measure and compare both the above mentioned development processes at the district level in the State of Andhra Pradesh. It also attempts for an inter-temporal analysis by comparing these development processes over three points of time viz., 1982-83, 1987-88 and 1992-93. This study suggests a five fold typology of district development experiences over a decade. First, it confirms the simultaneous prevalence of region cohesion along with severe regional inequality in the sense that, while growth benefits have spread to and permeated some of the districts, some are getting trapped in "vicious circle". Second, the pattern of human development is relatively stagnant across districts. Third, the tenuous relationship between regional development and human development is getting strengthened over the period under consideration. Fourth, it clearly recognises the presence of high growth along with disrupted human development in some of the districts in the state. Finally, the study reflects the mammoth importance of agricultural sector in promoting states' overall development process. - Reproduced.
