520 _aAt present, the academic discussion about the Europeanization of public administrations and the possible development of a European administrative space is concentrating on the matter of convergence or divergence between the administrative systems of the EU member states. The practical administrative preparation of the enlargement process to Middle and Eastern Europe has shown, however, that we still have only limited information about the legal and functional requirements of EU membership for public administrations. The current research situation points to far-reaching but not necessarily standardizing effects, which might rather lead to the development of a European administrative community, characterized by convergence in some areas as well as divergence in others, than to a unified European administrative space. - Reproduced.
