520 _aKarnataka is the second most arid state of India after Rajasthan where demands for water for various purposes like drinking and domestic use, irrigation and industrial are increasing rapidly. Fragmented responsibility of water issues between different government departments and lack of funds for maintenance, rehabilitation and modernisation of existing infrastructure further added to the intensity of problems. The article examines efficacy of multi-pronged strategy adopted by the state government to address these issues. While discussing the experiences and lessons learnt it suggests adoption of new approaches for various sectors. - Reproduced.
