520 _aFloods inundate a significant part of Gurdaspur district. Here a total of 177 villages have been identified as flood prone which cover approximately 12 per cent of the rural population of the district and as much as 20 per cent of its net cropped area. Apart from causing much damage to the life and property, the floods of high magnitude make the district lose food grains worth hundreds of crore of rupees, besides entailing a heavy financial burden on the state exchequer on account of compensation to the flood hit population. As floods keep recurring with regular periodicity, a detailed study of the problem therefore is an essential prerequisite for neutralising their impact on the economy and populace of the region. - Reproduced.
