520 _aThe importance of agriculture in the national economy naturally brings it high on the priority of any governent that mounts citadel of power in India. The UPA government that came to power in 2004 has promised to give a new thrust to the agricultural policy. It takes into account the declining share of agriculture in the total GDP and the rising credit requirements of this sector. This article analyses the salient and announced features of present goverment's agricultural policy. It suggests that a bold and holistic approach should guide the policy framework to address the requirements of agricultural sector.
