520 _aAs a survey of literature indicates, since Hawthorne studies, several researchers have shown positive impact of teams on people productivity. Although self-managed (or autonomous) teams have received utmost attention these days, very little is known how to create and externally lead such superb teams. These teams need specific kind of leadership for managing boundary between them and the organisation. Leading them is an inherently tricky task. In India, there exists an excellent approach to creating and externally leading superb teams of scientists and engineers as demonstrated by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam at ISRO and DRDL. At ISRO he had focus on creating an environment conducive to teamworking, integration of people, balancing hands-on and hands-off styles, effective communication, stimulating performance dimensions and taking responsibility for team's failure. At DRDL, he exemplified management by participation, design of a viable programme for the teams, creation of self-managed teams with support mechanism, effectiveness of matrix organisation for self-managed project teams, determinants of successful team performance, reorganisation of teams for renewal factor and augmenting their strength as well as team performance. - Reproduced.
