520 _aThe term `comptency' is used to clarify any underlying characteristic required for performing a given task, activity or role successfully. Competency may take the various core forms like Knowledge, Attitude, Skill and behavioural competency like Motives, Values, Self concept etc. Due to want of organised system, important Human Resource (HR) decisions like role suitability, deployment etc. often remain in the hand of few persons thus proving to be detrimental for long-term perspective of the organisation. Recently the HR practice making waves across the industry to overcome such limitation has been, Competency mapping. Competency mapping is the process of identification of the competencies required to perform successfully a given job or role or a set of tasks at a given point of time. It consists of breaking a given role or job into its constituent tasks or activities and identifying the competencies needed to perform the same successfully. Often the Competency assessment is misunderstood with Competency mapping-once one map down i.e. Identified the job responsibilities and competency requirements, should go for assessing where the individuals of the organisation stands in terms of the competencies do required. The articles is an initiative for low cost application of the practice for the industries. - Reproduced.
