520 _aWhatever may be the character of the political system; even in a modern dictatorial regime political participation has great importance. And traditional democratic theory generally regards participation by the individual in political activity as a virtue in its own rights. In fact, participation has been seen as a civic duty, as well as a sign of political health. Thus, the success of a democratic political system depends upon the nature and extent of the political participation among the citizens of the country irrespective of caste, colour, sex and region. But, in India reality provides us a very discouraging picture. Indian women in general, and the women of West Bengal in particular stands far away from the political world of the country in comparison of their male counterpart - Reproduced.
