520			_aThe pervading corruption in society can be seen as a fallout of the single-minded pursuit of material progress. Our efforts to deal with corruption will remian reactive and piecemenal and we would end up treating synptoms without addressing the root cause. The existing mechanism to check and control corruption have either no independence from the government or no teeth to put the independence to good use. The existing bodies have failed to deal with corruption, both in the bureaucracy and the political class. A complete overhaul of anti-corruption set up is imperative if we are serious about tackling corruption. Revitalizing and strengthening the existing anti-corruption laws and agencies and vesting them w ith legal powers to investigate corruption cases a higher level thoughout the country is the crying need of the hour. - Reproduced.
