With a discussion changes brought about in Panchayati Raj institutions since independence to ensure effective governance through equitable representation as well as economic growth with justice, the authors discuss hopes and disillusions created by the CD programme of 50s, `rebirth' of PRIs in 1977 till the 73rd Constitutional Amendment. They then present a discussion on their empirical study conducted in Madhya Pradesh covering details of structure and functions of PRIs under the new Panchayati Raj system, profile of sample studied, methodology, and its findings. They highlight existing reality prevailing in 16 sample villages regarding the support that women leaders received from their spouses and in-laws, and the factors that stiffle empowerment of women despite operationalisation of reservation for women. - Reproduced
