Making a case for transforming legal education in India a proposal to introduce 4+1 years law program in law schools - Journal of Indian Law Institute - 66(2),Apr-Jun, 2024: p.170-192
The Indian legal education is in an important crossroad wherein it has to ask some
basic and fundamental questions about its existing learning process. This selfrealization grows manifold for institutes embroiled in higher education. Having
said this, the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) is considered to be a
visionary document that not only suggests for path breaking reforms to put the
university system in a competitive advantage for an emerging knowledge society,
but also allows space to adopt measures to improve its functioning. In this perspective,
the article argues that India’s NEP 2020 could act as a pivotal tool to introduce a
4+1 years (full time study + full time internship/on the job training) law degree
program. Adoption of such a method will result in professional lawyers who will
have the skills and value training, and at the same time due to on-the-job experience,
a fair realization of what knowledge is and will be relevant for years.- Reproduced
