Navigating transformations during global crisis: The crucial partnership between government and nonprofits

The American Review of Public AdministrationSummary: The dynamics of nonprofit-government partnerships are essential for delivering public services, particularly in times of crisis. This study examines how these relationships influenced the resilience of nonprofits during the recent pandemic. Rather than focusing solely on the pandemic's impact, we explore how nonprofit-government partnerships prompted strategic changes within the nonprofit sector. Drawing on interdependency and resource dependency theories, we analyze the link between nonprofit-government relationships and programmatic shifts in nonprofit organizations. We collected survey data from U.S. based human services and arts and culture nonprofits in early 2023, supplemented by pre-pandemic financial data. Our findings reveal that increased partnerships with government agencies—often accompanied by additional government funding—spurred programmatic adaptations, enhancing organizational resilience. Notably, nonprofits facing greater challenges demonstrated a higher propensity for making strategic changes. Despite certain limitations, this study highlights the crucial role of government partnerships and proactive planning, especially in times of uncertainty. We conclude by outlining a roadmap for nonprofit resilience, advocating a forward-thinking approach that embraces challenges, adapts to change, and leverages setbacks as a catalyst for growth.- Reproduced
