Styles of Parenting as a predictor in behavioral problems among school children

IASSI Quarterly: Contributions to Indian Social ScienceSummary: The present research explores the role of parenting styles in behavioural problems among children. With this aim, a sample of 229 school students (3rd to 5th grade) in the age range of 9 to 12 years was drawn from various schools in Chandigarh and Mohali, India. The selected participants were tested on two psychological measures, namely, Parenting Style Scale, and Children Behaviour Checklist. The obtained data were statistically treated for z-test, Pearson’s correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. When the parenting styles of father and mother were compared, it was found that mothers are higher on Rejection vs. Acceptance, Carelessness vs. Protection, Utopian expectation vs. Realism, Lenient standard vs. Moralism, and Freedom vs. Discipline dimensions of parenting styles. Both father’s and mother’s parenting styles of Acceptance, Protection and Indulgence were found to be negatively related with children’s behavioural problems, i.e., mental distraction, aggressive, disruptive ehavior, and conduct problems. Results of stepwise multiple Regression provide good insight into the combined role of parenting styles in determining behavioural problems among young children. Results were discussed in the light of previous researches and pertinent theoretical models of parenting styles. – Reproduced
